Frank-PTI Pulp Analysers
Laboratory Refiners: Valley, PFI Mill, LR-40
Laboratory Refiners
Laboratory refiners are available for different purposes, sample sizes, and refining consistencies — each designed according to the relevant international standards.
Valley Beater (“Hollander”)
A traditional, cost-effective, and easy-to-use workhorse for basic laboratory refining.
A horizontally rotating rotor circulates the pulp, from which samples are taken at defined intervals for measurement.
Typical sample size: 360 g of fiber at 1.5–3.0% consistency, in accordance with ISO 5264/1, TAPPI T 200, and TAPPI T 205 standards.
PFI Mill
An advanced and precise vertical laboratory refiner designed with an emphasis on ergonomics and operator safety.
Requires only 5–30 g of fiber, making it ideal for research and studies where limited sample material is available.
Refining is typically carried out at 10% consistency, though a wide range of consistencies can be used in accordance with ISO 5264-2, DIN EN 25264-2, SCAN C 24, and TAPPI T 248 standards.
LR-40 (“Voith Refiner”)
The largest and most adjustable of the laboratory refiners — representing a “true” refining process based on fiber treatment between rotating disc plates.
The geometry of the refining plates can be changed using different plate designs.
Typical sample size: 1,500 g of fiber at 4% consistency.
Among laboratory refiners, it provides the most extensive data output and is the only model equipped with the Probenet data acquisition system.
Determination of Pulp Beating Degree and Drainage Rate in Accordance with International Standards
Frank-PTI’s Canadian Freeness and Schopper-Riegler instruments are already in daily use in several Finnish laboratories for analyzing various pulp types according to the respective Canadian Standard or Schopper-Riegler Standard.
These fundamental tools for pulp testing are available in several versions — from simple and cost-effective manual and pneumatic models to advanced digital versions with multiple auxiliary functions.
In the digital model, an integrated precision balance automatically records the measurement result, which can be further refined with consistency or temperature correction functions.
Using Probenet data transfer, the digital model also provides a drainage curve as a function of filtration time, offering deeper process insight.
Each delivery includes two specially manufactured measuring vessels, calibrated in ml/SR° scales.
RapidKöthen Handsheet Former
This system enables the preparation of dry, measurement-ready sheets from pulp samples in as little as ten minutes — repeatably, efficiently, and with minimal manual work, even for large sample volumes.
The equipment includes a sheet forming unit that drains circular sheets from the pulp through a wire screen, and one to five vacuum dryers for automatic sheet drying.
The sheet preparation process can run fully automatically according to predefined programs or be operated manually.
The water circulation system can be configured as either open or closed (“short circulation”), depending on laboratory requirements.
RapidKöthen has been very popular in Finland, especially at pulp mills.
Several systems are already in operation or on order, with excellent user experiences.
The examples above represent only a selection of available models.
