Universal Tester - various measurements on the same instrument platform

The so-called Universal Tester is a versatile laboratory instrument that, with suitable accessories, can perform a wide variety of mechanical tests.
In simple terms, it is a vertical tensile testing device that can also measure compressive forces and, with additional modules, perform various compression and pressing tests — such as axial compression, bursting (as shown in the image left), and bending (image middle).

With a turning device, the  test can be rotated to be horizontal, enabling, for example, friction testing (as shown in image right), all in accordance with the relevant standards.
Wet tensile strength measurement is carried out using the Finch Test water dispenser, ensuring standardized testing conditions.

Because the accessories are modular, the basic Universal Tester unit can initially be purchased cost-effectively with only one testing configuration — for example, dry tensile strength — and later expanded by adding compatible accessories for new types of measurements with only minor additional investment.

Universal Testers have attracted significant interest in Finland across a wide range of paper grades — from tissue to board and specialty papers.

Internal Bond Tester

For internal bond strength testing, Frank-PTI offers the Internal Bond Tester together with a sample preparation station designed to produce the required test assemblies.
The testing device is available with three different pendulum weights, making it suitable for products with a wide range of strength levels.
Both sample preparation and testing are fast and efficient, supported by automated functions that simplify operation.

The Internal Bond Tester and sample preparation unit have also become popular in Finland, both in research laboratories and in production control rooms, where they provide immediate support for setting process parameters.

Cobb-Unger

Frank-PTI has put much focus on the usability and ergonomics of its instruments.
A good example of this is the popular Cobb-Unger tester, which features an integrated weighted roller and sample holder built into the instrument’s structure.

Thanks to this design, the standardized rolling step can be performed by simply sliding the sample–blotting paper assembly through a dedicated holder beneath the fixed weighted roller — eliminating the need to lift and place the roller manually onto the sample.
Similarly, pressing the oil/water cylinder against the sample can be done without using a cumbersome spring-loaded lever.

Especially when handling larger numbers of samples, these design choices significantly reduce the risk of hand strain and repetitive stress injuries for laboratory personnel.

For both Cobb and Unger testers, smaller liquid cylinders are also available — 50, 25, or even 10 cm² instead of the standard 100 cm². These are particularly useful in laboratory research, where only a limited amount of sample material may be available.

ProbeNet

Frank-PTI’s tool for recording and enhanced analyzis of measurement data is ProbeNet.
It is a software platform that collects and stores measurement data from individual instruments — for example, to a local PC or a company-wide SQL database.
Each sample can be assigned ID tags and background information, making it easier to retrieve and compare data later.

ProbeNet enables advanced data visualization and analysis, such as statistical evaluation of parallel measurements, detection of outliers and deviations, or detailed analysis of variability and time-series data — for example, from a sample’s fracture event.

ProbeNet also enables seamless integration of measurement results from different generations of Frank-PTI instruments, via serial ports, HDMI, or Ethernet connections.
ProbeNet is available as an optional add-on for most sheet testing instruments and for selected pulp testing instruments, including a one-time license fee.
For the ModularLine system, ProbeNet is required.
